O
ur founder, G.W. Caldwell, began in funeral service in Gay, Georgia in 1910. Embalming was seldom done, but when the family requested it, embalming was done in the home, and the only charge made to them was for the embalming fluid. There were few funeral home establishments as we know them today. This was still the era of horse-drawn hearses, and "undertaking" establishments were often add-ons to other businesses, such as cabinet making.
Mr. Caldwell moved with his family to Newton County in 1920, and began a legacy of funeral service in our county, with his son, Lewis Caldwell, daughter and son-in-law, Sam and Ruth Caldwell Cowan, and grandson, Judson Caldwell (third generation), following in his footsteps.
