The Rev. A Mutombu R. Kayij was born on August 22, 1943, at Rubwiz in the
Democratic Republic of Congo. He was the seventh child of the Reverend
Chifemb Mutombu Timothée, one of the first Congolese UMC pastors in South
Congo.

He began his primary education at Kapanga and Likasi and continued his
secondary education at Mulungwishi. He received a bachelor's degree in theology
in 1971 at Mulungwishi and was ordained a UMC pastor that same year.

Upon completing his studies, Rev. Kayij began his pastoral work in Mulungwishi.
Two years later, he was appointed as district superintendent first at Kolwezi and
later at Lubumbashi.

After serving in these roles, Rev. Kayij continued his education at the Faculté de
Théologie Évangélique de Bangui (FATEB), in the Central African Republic, where
he received his Master's of Divinity in 1983.

He returned to Mulungwishi and worked as a professor in the School of Theology.
Two years later, he was appointed as the administrator for the Hôpital
Méthodiste de Mwangej at Kolwezi.

In 1988, Rev. Kayij became a UMC missionary appointed to North Africa. He
served in Constantine, Algeria, until 1994. He was then appointed to Tunisia
where he served until 1997.

He came to the US in 1997 to study Christian-Muslim relations at the Hartford
Seminary in Hartford, CT, until 2000. He returned to his mission in Tunisia,
where he worked until his retirement in June 2009. He lived in WA State.

The Rev. Kayij is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kona, seven children, 15
grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

Il fût le septième enfant du Révérend Pasteur Chifemb Mutombu Timothée, l'un
des premiers pasteurs autochtones de l'église Méthodiste Unie du Sud Congo.

Le Pasteur Kayij effectua ses études primaires à Kapanga et à Likasi, ses études
secondaires puis supérieures en théologie à Mulungwishi où il fût ordonné
pasteur officiellement en 1971.

De 1978 à 1983, avec sa famille, il se rendit en République Centrafricaine où il
obtînt sa Maîtrise en théologie.

De retour au Congo, RDC, il enseigna pendant un an à la faculté de théologie de
Mulungwishi puis fût nommé Administrateur de l'hôpital Méthodiste Mwangej à
Kolwezi jusqu'en 1988.

Nommé Missionnaire en 1988 en Afrique du Nord jusqu'à sa retraite en 2009. Il
continua ses études de 1997 à 2000, aux USA (Hartford Seminary, CT) pour se
spécialiser en relations islamo-chrétiennes.

Le Pasteur Kayij était marié a maman Kona Kuleya Kayij, était père de huit
enfants, de quinze petits-enfants, et de trois arrières petits-enfants.

Il vécut heureux et rassasié des jours auprès des siens.


A Funeral Service for Rev. Kayij will be held Saturday, April 6, 2019, 1:00 P.M., at the First United Methodist Church, 1113 Conyers Street SW, in Covington, with Pastor Mulongo Mpoyo and Pastor Tshishinen C. Mpoyo officiating. Rev. Kayij will lie in state at the church from 12:30 - 1:00 P.M. Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family at the church following the service, from 3:00 - 4:30 P.M.
