Aubrey Sonny Benton

Aubrey Lucian Benton, affectionately known to loved ones as Sonny, passed away peacefully on December 30th, 2023, leaving behind a legacy graced with kindness, passion, and love. Born on April 11th, 1941, in the heart of Covington, Georgia. Sonny's journey through life was one marked by steadfast dedication to family and an abiding love for his community. His union with his high school sweetheart, Harriette Johnson Potts Benton, blossomed throughout the years, their love story standing as a testament to enduring companionship. Together, they nurtured a family that grew to include a son, James Keith, and his wife, Sherry Benton; a grandson, James Kyle and his wife, Heather; and a cherished great-granddaughter, Hadley James Benton. His professional life was defined by his meticulous work as an accountant at Bibb Manufacturing in Macon, Georgia, where he dutifully served until his retirement in 1996. Upon retiring, Sonny and Harriette resettled at Jackson Lake, returning to their roots and the community that meant so much to them both. A man of deep convictions, Sonny found spiritual solace within the walls of the Red Oak Methodist Church. Alongside Harriette, he also shared a love for adventure through their lifetime membership with the Georgia Good Sams RV Club's Lucky 13 chapter, an outlet that fostered meaningful friendships and cherished memories. Sonny's cultural appetite was diverse and vibrant; he relished exploring the realms of literature, feasting on the works of Stephen King, Stuart Woods, C.J. Box, and Vince Flynn. His musical taste spanned the spectrum from country twangs to rock-and-roll rhythms. Off the page and outside the melody, Sonny channeled his artistic soul into painting, finding joy in creating whimsy yard art that reflected his creative spirit.

Predeceased by his parents, Ruth and Aubrey Benton, Sonny is also lovingly remembered by his brother-in-law Jimmy Johnson and wife Anne; nieces and nephews, Beth Johnson Ross, Jim Johnson Jr., Evan Johnson, Gentry Johns; and his extended family of great nieces and nephews, each of whom carry a piece of his warm and benevolent heart.

A Memorial Service for Mr. Aubrey “ Sonny “ Benton will be held Wednesday , January  3, 2024, 11:00 A.M., at Crosspointe Christian Church, 4550 Georgia Highway 20, Conyers. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the church from 10:00AM – 11:00AM
