Billie Eloise Helms Spigner, of Oxford, passed away Sunday, November 14, 2021, at the age of 79. Mrs. Spigner was born and raised in Arlington, Virginia. She was a current member of Oxford Baptist and a past member of Prospect United Methodist Church where she and her husband were very active both teaching Sunday school class for many years. In addition, she was a member of the Covington Conyers Choral Guild for many years as well. After obtaining her Batchelor’s and Master’s degree from the University of South Carolina, she started her teaching career teaching English, History and Mythology. Teaching in many different schools, Mrs. Spigner worked in the Bay County school system in Florida, Calhoun and Lexington Counties in South Carolina, and North Cobb High School and Wheeler High School in Georgia. She was an avid reader and enjoyed learning new things, taking trips to the beach and looking for seashells, especially in Sanibel Island, Charleston Isle of Palms and Myrtle Beach. Mrs. Spigner also earned her Black Belt in Karate and competed with the American Taekwondo Association. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Henry and Eloise Quinn Helms.
Survivors include her loving husband of 56 years, Johnny Spigner; daughter, Melanie Brooke; son, Mark Kevin Spigner; grandchildren, Gavin Joseph Petrunich, Madison Ann Spigner, Jordan Eloise Spigner; and brother, Doug Helms.
A Funeral Service for Mrs. Spigner will be held Thursday, November 18, 2021, 2:00 P.M., at Oxford Baptist Church, 305 Emory Street NW, in Oxford with Rev. Kevin W. Wilhite and Dr. Andy Brown officiating. Interment will be held Friday, November 19, 4:00 P.M., at Elmwood Memorial Gardens, in South Carolina. Friends are invited to visit with the family at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Wednesday, November 17, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made to the Rheumatoid Arthritis Association at https://www.arthritis.org/ .
