Access RoadBilly Carl (B.C.) Crowell of Covington passed away July 16, 2010. B.C. was born in Porterdale, GA on Sept. 9, 1923 to the late Homer Guy and Thelma Miller Crowell.  A natural athlete, he received a baseball scholarship to Oglethorpe University where he lettered in both baseball and football and was named to the Blue Key Honor Society.  In 1997 he was inducted into Oglethorpe's Athletic Hall of Fame.  B.C. served in the US Navy during WWII, played baseball for a New York Yankees farm team, worked as a VA Recreational Therapist and spent a year farming in Arkansas.  He returned home to become Porterdale's Athletic Director from 1948-1970, where he coached and mentored students, managed the Porterdale Swimming Pool and the Porterdale Golf Course, coordinated the adult baseball and softball leagues, and served as Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 207.  From 1950-60 he served on the Porterdale City Council, and from 1960-1965 he was Mayor of Porterdale.  Also during this period he was a founding member of the Newton County Recreation Commission and was instrumental in organizing the athletic program for Newton County's junior high schools. B.C. retired from Covington Moulding in 1985, and immersed himself in volunteer work and community organizations.  His lifetime commitment to the citizens of Newton County has been rewarded by being the recipient of numerous awards.  B.C. was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Jane Hedges Crowell, and his brother, Homer Guy Crowell Jr. He is survived by his sister, Pauline Crowell Sullivan (Bill) of Covington; son, Matt Crowell of Lawrenceburg, TN; and daughters, Sherrill Jones (Alan) of Milledgeville, Susan Crowell (Michael Duttweiler) of Covington, and Nancy Matthews (John) of Conyers; grandchildren, Lauren, Jared (Laura), and Lindsey Matthews, Justin Jones (Jennifer), Christen Pilkinton (Mark), and Corey Crowell; great-grandchildren, Garrett and Allison Pilkinton, Blake Jones; and a number of nieces and nephews.   The family will receive visitors at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home located on 1215 Access Road from 5:00-7:00 on Saturday, July 17th.  Services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, July 18th at the First Presbyterian Church in Covington with Rev. William B. Wade officiating.  Interment will be in the Covington City Cemetery.  Those who wish to do so may make donations to The Friends of Porterdale, PO Box 874, Porterdale, GA 30070, to rebuild the Porter Memorial Gymnasium.
