Donald “Don” Lewis Allen, of Covington, passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at the age of 85. Don was a visionary and left his small town of Winder to take a job in Atlanta with AT&T. There he carved out a long and brilliant career where he worked tirelessly to achieve countless accomplishments, including earning the highest award for innovation, the Eagle Award. A godly man whose love for the Lord came first, Don never passed up an opportunity to share his faith. He was ordained as a deacon at First Baptist Church in Covington and continued to serve and worship at various churches over the years - Midway Baptist, Oxford Baptist, and Crosspointe Baptist Church. He was a passionate church volunteer and supporter, and every activity he was involved in, whether at work or in leisure, he was continuously focused on being a witness for Christ. Don was a loving and protective husband and father, and he shared a special bond with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was always involved in his kid’s activities, whether coaching Little League football and baseball as well as leading recreational activities and youth group events at church. He was gifted with an amazing sense of humor and was always ready for a good joke. In his free time, he loved all things outdoors - camping, fishing, hunting, water skiing and planting his coveted annual garden. Additionally, Don was an avid ping pong player, and he never missed a chance to play in a game of neighborhood basketball or football. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Essie (Barber) Allen; sister, Doris Allen; and brothers, A.L. Allen, Morris Allen.
Survivors include his loving wife, Joyce Allen; daughter, Debbie Shepherd (Marty); son, Chuck Allen (Kelli); grandchildren, Lauren Kerr (Chad), Jacob Allen, Abigayle Allen; great-grandchildren, Lorelei Elizabeth Kerr, Emmaline Grace Kerr; sister, Martha McDonald; as well as several nieces and nephews.
