Glenwood "Glen" D. Barrow

d. November 26, 2020

Social Circle

Glenwood “Glen” D. Barrow, 70, of Social Circle died Thursday, Nov. 26, 2020, at Abbey Hospice after a lengthy illness.

Glen was born in Henry County, Va., on March 1, 1950, to the late George Dewey Barrow and Mabel Estelle Coone Barrow.

If Glen had been born just nine months later, he could have avoided the Vietnam War draft entirely. But fate must have picked Glen’s birthday, as with his draft selection. Glen proudly served in the United States Army, 101st Airborne Division and achieved the rank of SP/5. He was honorably discharged on April 13, 1973.

Glen worked for Jones Truck line for 17 years as a Teamster and retired as a cross-country truck driver. He had a strong work ethic and old-school responsibilities, even if they weren’t his responsibility.

Glen never had biological children, but he was a natural husband, stepdad, and Papa. He had a deep, booming voice and a loud, carefree, gravelly laugh that carried through the house and filled it with joy. He was a fun-loving, gentle giant, a larger-than-life man who helped put the word “family” in the term “blended family.” He appreciated the simple things, like pepperoni pizza, Coca-Cola and cigarettes. He was a friend to animals, and they were drawn to his sweet spirit. He was selfless, with unconditional love and kindness. Glen never met a stranger and gave everything just to put a smile on someone’s face. He loved being with his wife, children, grandchildren and animals, and he wanted the people he adored most to be happy. Anyone who had the privilege of knowing him cherished and treasured him deeply.

Surviving are his loving wife Sharon Barrow of Social Circle; stepdaughters Debbie (Warren) Smith of Covington, Stephanie Taylor of Social Circle and Kaitlin (Michael) Farrow of Watkinsville; and grandchildren Justin Self, Corrinn Self, Logan Bureau, Pierceson Farrow and Flint Farrow.

In addition to his parents, Glen was preceded in death by his brothers, Alvis Eugene Barrow and Kenneth Wayne Barrow.

This obituary was prepared with love and affection by Mr. Barrow’s family.
