Helen M. Sullivan

Helen Martin Sullivan, 94, passed away Friday, October 14, 2022.  She was born September 16, 1928 in Porterdale, Georgia to Ruth Harper Martin and Brown (Turk) Martin.  She had wonderful memories of growing up in the close-knit Porterdale community, and she often told stories about her happy childhood.  She graduated from Porterdale High School in 1945, and then went on to complete her education at Draughon’s Business College in Atlanta.  She loved living in Atlanta as a young woman and would often reminisce about riding the street cars and shopping at her all-time favorite store, Rich’s.

After she married and returned to Newton County, she got a job working in the office of Dr. Goodwin Tuck, where she worked for 37 years.  She enjoyed working in the busy doctor’s office and was proud that she was able to get to know and help many patients over the years.  After she retired, she worked part-time for several years as a pharmacy tech at Kroger.

Helen was a lifelong member of Porterdale Presbyterian Church, where she was honored to serve as an elder.  She loved shopping for clothes, had a great sense of style, and always kept up with the latest fashions.  In her younger years, she enjoyed working outdoors, riding her lawn mower, and maintaining her beautiful yard.  She loved watching old classic movies and listening to gospel singing.  She was an avid sports fan, and she closely followed college football, the Atlanta Braves and PGA golf.  She loved the Georgia Bulldogs and always cheered them on, never missing a UGA football or basketball game on television.

Mrs. Sullivan was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Howard Sullivan.

She is survived by her sons, Larry Sullivan (Joyce), Greg Sullivan (Shellie); grandchildren, Kristen Sullivan Baxley (Harry), Justin Sullivan (Heather), and Amber Bennett (Eric); great-granddaughter, Emily Sullivan; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Sullivan will be held Friday, October 21, 2022, 2:00 P.M., at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Thomas H. Johnson officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, two hours prior to her service from 12 Noon – 1:45 P.M.
