Ira Timothy Capes of Oxford passed away November 12, 2013 at the age of 70.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Tim Capes' memory to the church of your choice.
A 1961 graduate of Newton County High School, he earned a Certificate in Microsoft Windows from Clayton State College and studied Business Administration at Georgia State University.
Mr. Capes served in the US Navy as a Quartermaster from 1961 to 1964 and ministered as a Protestant Lay Leader on board the USS Conquest from 1962-63. He taught Sunday school at Oxford Baptist Church from 1978-80. He last attended Shiloh United Methodist Church in Almon.
After working three years as an Assistant Office Manager for Phelan Finance Company, he joined Hercules in 1967 and received two promotions during his six years of service.
Upon retirement from the U.S. Postal Service in 2009, he received a certificate of award in appreciation of devotion to duty during his 39 years of government service. During his tenure, Mr. Capes earned two Special Achievement and Cash Awards for performance recognition.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, working in the yard, going to classic car shows and collecting treasures which he sold, and often gave away, at a local outdoor market.
Mr. Capes was devoted to his step-children, daughters of Lynn Brand Miller: Amy & Steven Norton, Jan and Jill Miller; and grandchildren, Alex Frizzell, Bailey Norton, Emily and Gracie Miller, and Shelby and Natalie Miller. "I am so very thankful to have had Tim as a father figure these past 35 years of my life. He has always loved me unconditionally and always treated me as his very own daughter," writes Jill Miller.
Mr. Capes is preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Corris Capes; brothers William Harold (Billy) Capes, and Gene Ellwood (Pat) Capes; and Sister Martha Diane Frederick; brother-in-law, Hayward Smith; sister-in-law Elizabeth Capes; nieces, Diana Capes Denney, Christi Heather Valentine, Stephanie Marie Frederick, Ella Jean Frederick, Kristen Elise Frederick; and nephews, Michael Thurmond, Stephen Marcus Frederick, Timothy David Case; and his favorite aunt, Polly Capes Bell.
Mr. Capes is survived by his brother, Preston (Tony) and Lynn Capes; and sisters, Rachael and Buster Jenkins, and Colleen and Dwayne Jackson; sister-in-law Esther Capes; and brother-in-law Wallace Frederick. His extended family includes Serita Capes, George and Lynn Valentine; and dear friend, Rita Sanders Parker.

Great nieces and nephews: Jason & Shannon Mock, Brandy and Sean Garner, Chris Williams, Frances Darity, Silina and Keith Hodges, Travis and Sarah Denney, Tiffany & Bruce Harden, Evelyn, Niki, Faith, Ian, Aaron and Camryn Frederick, Robby and Danielle Case, Jonathan Case, Reannon and Trey Cool, Kayla Thornton and Andy Mays, Caitlin Ewing, Chris and Camden Valentine, Emma and Lily O'Kelley, Eli and Jonathan Capes, Wyatt and Gunner Jackson; first cousins include Gerry Moss, Carole Gassett Carlton, Jean Gassett, Virginia Thornton Caswell, Arlene Thornton Moseley and Gerald Thornton who shared a childhood memory of the times he and Tim would check his rabbit traps or go squirrel hunting with his sawed off .410 shotgun.
Niece, Darlene Hammond said it best, "We will surely miss him. He has left a legacy of love on this earth."
