James S. Brown

Access RoadRev. James S. Brown of Porterdale, passed away January 11, 2012, at the age of 92. Rev. Brown was a loving and faithful member of Porterdale Baptist Church, in Porterdale. He was born December 1, 1919, in Lithonia, to the late Henry P. and Annie Maude (Fowler) Brown. After quitting school, in the 8th grade, he worked for Western Union before joining the Civilian Conservation Corps. Rev. Brown then joined the United States Army Air Force, and served six years during World War II. Once Rev. Brown was called to preach, he went back to school and completed seminary after graduating from Baptist Bible Institute, in Graceville, FL, Mercer University, in Macon, and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, in New Orleans, LA. The churches he served in Georgia include: New Rocky Creek, in Mansfield; Collinsville Mission - now Central Baptist, in Lithonia; First Baptist, in Lovejoy; Pepperton Baptist, in Jackson; Porterdale Baptist; and Lake Cindy Baptist, in Hampton. He loved to fish, but his greatest love was being a "fisher of men" for Jesus. He and his son, Michael, owned Brown Signs, in Covington, for more than 20 years. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Charlotte Brown.He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Lorraine Mercer Brown of Porterdale; son and daughter-in-law, Michael Alan and Barbara Brown of Mansfield; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Jerry Wheeler of McDonough; grandchildren, Sharon Gilbert, Lisa Ferrell, Shane Brown, Chad Brown, Kelly Massucco; 11 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Marvin and Nancy Brown of Decatur, Louis and Beth Brown of Bremen; many nieces and nephews.Funeral Services for Rev. Brown will be held Saturday, January 14, 2012, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Rd., in Covington, with Rev. Dickie Johnson officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, January 13, from 6:00-8:00 PM.
