Jesse Lee "J.L." Johnson, husband of the late, Barbara (Shepherd) Johnson, of Covington, passed away January 5, 2018, at the age of 82. Mr. Johnson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, in Covington, and graduate of Newton County High School - Class of 1953. Following graduation, he served in the National Guard for 37 years. He was an avid NASCAR fan and made 50 consecutive trips to the Daytona 500. Prior to her passing, Mr. Johnson and his wife, Barbara, enjoyed extensive travels. He was adored by all and will be greatly missed. In addition to his wife of 59 years, Mr. Johnson was also preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Eugene and Bessie (Day) Johnson.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Jodi and Larry Dover of Canton; sons and daughters-in-law, Phil Johnson and Audrey Workman of Signal Mountain, TN, Bret and Yvonne Johnson of Jasper, GA; grandchildren, Maddie Workman Johnson, Sophie Workman Johnson, Beth and Sam Quinn, Ben and Crystal Johnson, Kirsti and Stephan Richards, Zane Dover; great-grandchildren, Evie, Maddox, Ruby, Peyton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Eleanor and T.A. Haney of Covington, Gerrie and Otis Syfrett of Chipley, FL, Zandra and Larry Davis of Conyers; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mr. Johnson will be held Monday, January 8, 2018, 12 Noon, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1169 Clark Street SW, in Covington, with Rev. Dr. William B. Wade, Jr., and Mr. Ben Johnson officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church Monday, one hour prior to the service, beginning at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made, in memory of Mr. Johnson, to the Alzheimer's Association - GA Chapter, 41 Perimeter Center East,
