Jimmy Bates of Oxford, passed away December 9, 2017, at the age of 86. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Mr. Bates proudly served his country during the Korean War. Time spent with family, including his beloved dogs, Rascal and Buddy, was an important part of his daily life, as was his passion for reading. Mr. Bates, often found with a book in his hand, easily read over 20 books each month. Other favorite pastimes were serving his church family and going to the mountains. Mr. Bates was preceded in death by his daughter, Yvonne (Voni) Bates Crowe; parents, James L., Sr., and Rosa Claire (Capes) Bates; sister, Shelia Bates Adamson; and brother, Bob Bates.

Survivors include the "love of his life" and wife of 63 years, Kathryn Bates; daughters and son-in-law, Jana Phillips of Dacula, Beth and Rick Goddard of Blairsville; grandchildren, Lacey Sullivan, Camden Goddard, Rachel Butts, McKenzie Crowe; great-granddaughter, Aubree Goddard-Miller; brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Marilyn Bates; sisters, Joyce Williams, Linda Williams; several nieces and nephews; as well as his adopted family at Alcovy Fitness Center.

A Funeral Service for Mr. Bates will be held Monday, December 11, 2017, 2:00 PM, at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 10 Almon Church Road, in Covington, with Rev. Mike Wadley officiating. Entombment will follow at Memory Chapel Mausoleum, in Lawnwood Memorial Park, Covington. The family will receive friends at the church, one hour prior to his service, from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Georgia Chapter, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 550, Atlanta, GA 30346.
