John William Manning

Access RoadJohn William Manning, Jr., age 80, of New Orleans, LA, died June 5, 2011, at Abbey Hospice in Walton County. Dr. Manning, a beloved Professor of Physiology at Emory University, taught, mentored and trained nurses, medical students and Ph.D. candidates for over 30 years. Dr. Manning received his B.S. in Biology from Loyola University of the South, his Masters in Physiology from Tulane University, where he received the Sigma Xi Award for Outstanding Research, and his Ph.D. in Physiology from Loyola University of Chicago before moving to Atlanta and beginning his distinguished career at Emory. Dr. Manning served the Emory University community in numerous roles including a tenured Professor of Physiology in the School of Medicine, the Acting Chairman of the Department of Physiology, and the Executive Secretary and Chairman of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. He was highly regarded by his colleagues as a scientist and a friend, and they honored him by selecting him to serve for many years as the Grand Marshall of Emory University's graduation exercises. Dr. Manning focused his research on the central nervous system's regulation of cardiovascular activity and received multiple awards and grants throughout his career. He published more than fifty scientific articles and was asked to present his findings at multiple conferences throughout the country. Dr. Manning was invited to be a Visiting Scientist at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden and a Visiting Professor at Shinshu University, Matsumoto, Japan. He was a member of several professional societies and earned many national and international awards and honors, including the Senior Fellow, NHLBI National Research Service Award from Baker Institute, Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Manning was an avid tennis player, loved to travel and found peace and solitude spending time on the water. He gave generously of his time to his church, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and the Catholic Center at Emory University. He will be remembered for his engaging intellect, progressive thinking and rowdy softball games with his kids on warm summer afternoons. Dr. Manning is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Brock Magruder of Maitland, FL, Dr. Cheryl Manning and Terry Phillips of Oxford, GA; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Michael and Linda Manning of Conyers, GA, Don and Melissa Manning of Seattle, WA, Ed and Kristin Manning of Asheville, NC, Bobby and Marci Manning of Sharpsburg, GA; former and only spouse, Cynthia Satterlee Manning of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Brock and Katy Magruder, Trey and Teagan Phillips, Matthew, Monica, Nick, Joshua, Margaret, Daniel, Baylor, Quillan, Sophie, Jordan, Chris, and Kailyn Manning; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Varney Prejean of Mandeville, LA; numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. Manning was preceded in death by his son, John William Manning, III, his parents, John William Manning and Dorothy Baylor Manning, and sister and brother-in-law, Claudia and Angelo Nicolosi.A Funeral Mass will be said Thursday, June 9, 2011, 11:00 A.M., at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Atlanta with Rev. James Shillinger presiding. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, GA, Wednesday, June 8, 2011 from 5 - 8 P.M. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church or the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America.
