Larry Griffin Marlow

June 26, 1945 — March 29, 2025

Conyers

Larry Griffin Marlow, 79, of Conyers, Georgia, took his final flight on March 29, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, adventure, and craftsmanship. Born on June 26, 1945 in Bowdon, Georgia. Larry lived a life full of passion, dedication, and service.

A skilled and fearless helicopter pilot, Larry spent his career soaring the skies, always ready for the next adventure. He joined the Army at age 18 to be a helicopter pilot. Larry bravely served two tours of duty in Vietnam, where his skill and valor earned him two Bronze Stars. His years of service were marked by dedication, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to his fellow soldiers. After his military career, he continued to serve and protect as a Dekalb County police officer/helicopter pilot until his retirement. He also flew emergency medical transport teams for Medivac. He always said he “never worked a day in his life” because he loved flying. If there was ever a helicopter within 20 miles, he could hear it and identify what type it was.

When he wasn’t flying, he found joy in woodworking, crafting beautiful pieces that will serve as lasting reminders of his skill and creativity.

More than anything, Larry was a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandpa and "Poppy," and a cherished friend to many. His kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love for his family will never be forgotten. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome, sharing stories, laughter, and life lessons along the way.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Mary Frances Marlow; daughters Dawn Hamer (Greg), Denice Pugh (Danny); grandchildren Andrew Cain (Katlyn), Marley Cain (Ashley Vann), Daniel Pugh (Ellie Rhoades), David Pugh (Madi Moyer); great-grandchildren Karter Cain, Brooks Cain, and Hazel Cain; sister Deborah Freyre (Gary); and many nieces and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by parents Whit and Hildred Marlow; son-in-law Eddie Cain; grandson Chasen Cain; sister Joy McGarity (Rob); and grandparents Ralph and Clois Eady.

His family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to his amazing caregivers—Danita, Donna, Jesse, Lachielle, and Renee—who provided him with unwavering compassion, support, and love in his final days. They began as caregivers and became family along the way.

A service to honor Larry’s remarkable life will be held on April 4, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the church, one hour prior to his service, from 3:00 - 4:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Zion Baptist Church (Covington, Georgia) in his memory.

Though his wings have carried him beyond this world, Larry’s love, craftsmanship, and adventurous spirit will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
