Linton Robeson Lovett

Linton Robeson Lovett of Covington, Georgia died Saturday, July 30, 2011, at Abbey Hospice. He was born March 25, 1923, in Marietta, Georgia. He was educated in the Atlanta public schools. He attended Emory and Virginia College, a Methodist college in Virginia, where he earned an AB degree in 1943. In 1947, he graduated from Duke University School of Law with an LLB degree. Mr. Lovett served in World War II in the United States Navy in the Central and North Solomons Campaigns with the rank of Lieutenant in command of LSTs. Following the war and graduation from law school, he worked for the State Department in the Office of the United States High Commission in Germany. As Resident Officer he was in charge of the civilian transformation and democratization of Germany in the State of Hessen. While in Germany, he met and married Clara Womble of Raleigh, North Carolina. He was next assigned to the United States Embassy in Tehran, Iran serving as an attache. Following his foreign service, the Lovetts returned to the United States. They moved to Miami, Florida where he practiced law, first as an Assistant County Attorney and then for many years as a partner in the law firm of Howard Brawner and Lovett. He retired in 1991 and they moved to Covington, Georgia. Mr. Lovett was a scholar of United States and world history, economics, and religion. His quest for knowledge never diminished as evidenced by a recent study of calculus to understand its meaning and applications. He was fluent in German and familiar with French, Flemish, Spanish, Portuguese and Greek. He was an active member of the Covington First United Methodist Church where he enjoyed teaching, occasionally, the Josie Goode Sunday School Class. Mr. Lovett was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Edgar Lovett and Harriet Lane Robeson Lovett, his wife, Clara Womble Lovett, brother, Wilson Lovett, and stepson, Lidden Pate. He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Martha Lokey Lovett; his step-daughters, Gale Marie Pate of Atlanta, and Lokey Pate Mooney (Andy) of Acworth; step-grandchildren, Brett Knight Drew Mooney, Billy and Alexandra Pate; cousins, Lucy Cline Huie, Pierce Lovett Cline and John Boardman. A memorial service will be held at the Covington First United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 4 at 11:00 A.M. The Reverends Douglas Gilreath, Jan McCoy and James Sanders will officiate. The family will receive friends in the church parlor between 10:00 A.M. and 11:00 A.M. before the service.
