Access RoadMartha Jean Sanders Smalley born in Marion, Alabama, to the late William Henry and Annie Rae Sanders, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 27, 2012. Ms. Smalley, a devoted Christian, was married to the late Jack Smalley, Sr., and was the mother of four children, of whom she was very proud. Ms. Smalley deeply valued her education and studied at Judson College, University of Montevallo, The University of Alabama, and Georgia State University. An educator for 31 years, Ms. Smalley loved teaching, but more importantly loved her students. She began her teaching career in Geneva, AL, and went on to teach in West Blocton, AL; Akron, AL; Douglasville, GA, and Newton County, GA. She loved spending time with her friends, working in her flower beds and cheering for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Ms. Smalley is survived by her four children, her seven grandchildren and her elder brother. Her children are: Dr. Jack Smalley, Jr., and his wife, Anne of Tuscaloosa, AL, William Randall Smalley, and his wife, Kay of Memphis, TN, Kim Smalley Hubbard, and her husband, Scott of Covington, GA, and Jeffrey Powell Smalley, and his wife, Lisa of Chattanooga, TN. Her grandchildren are: Jack Smalley, III, of Mobile, AL, Lauren Hubbard of Covington, GA, Zachary Smalley of Memphis, TN, Jarrett Hubbard of Covington, GA, Zoe Smalley of Memphis, TN, Robey Smalley, and Conrad Smalley, both of Tuscaloosa, AL. Also surviving are her brother and sister-in-law, Billy Rae and Blanche Sanders of Marion, AL; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial graveside service will be held for family and close family friends Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 10:30 AM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington, GA. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Monday, May 28, from 6:00-8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made in memory of Ms. Smalley to The Central Church of Christ, 160 Highway 142 East, Covington, GA 30014.
