Mary Jo Roberts, of Oxford, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Friday, June 14, 2024, at the age of 87. Mrs. Roberts moved with her husband Don to Newton County in 1968. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and respected member of her community. She was a devout Christian and faithful member of Oxford Baptist Church, later Gaithers United Methodist Church and finally Central Community Church. Her faith was an essential part of her life and she devoted herself to church womens and widows' groups. She found great happiness in helping others and living out her faith. Mrs. Roberts loved her family and took immense joy being with her grandchildren. She was a dedicated teacher for 32 years, starting her career in the Atlanta school system and retiring from Palmer Stone Elementary, Oxford, in 1994. In addition, Mrs. Roberts was a member of the Retired Educators Association. Her generosity knew no bounds; she volunteered tirelessly for the Adult Literacy Program and dedicated her time supporting the homeless at local shelters. She loved Jesus and would talk about Him to everyone she met.
Mary Jo was born in Wedowee AL, and grew up in Carrollton Ga. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from West Georgia College and a Master’s degree from Georgia Southern College.
She was preceded in death by her husband Don Roberts and siblings, Ethel, Coleman, Hazel, J.C., James Awbrey, George, Henry, Annie Mae, Paul and Ford. She is survived by her children, Janet Picardat (John), Scott Roberts (Kristy); grandchildren, Caleb Waggle, Jessica Picardat, Jacob Picardat, Christian Roberts, Campbell Roberts; great granchild, Dalton Stevens.
A Funeral Service for Mrs. Roberts will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2024, 2:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, and interment following in Oxford Historical Cemetery, in Oxford. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home, Tuesday, June 18, from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M.
