Maurice Loren "Bud" Northcutt

Maurice Loren "Bud" Northcutt of Covington passed away peacefully August 1, 2017, at the age of 89. Born in Gorgas, AL on May 21, 1928, he graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Building Construction and earned a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri, Rolla School of Mines. After joining the Army Corps of Engineers, Bud served at Ft. Rucker, AL and was stationed in Baumholder, Germany, where he met his first wife, Waltraut Schütt, with whom he had three children. The youngest, Richard, died tragically in 1979.
Apart from a brief period as engineer for Alabama Power, Bud continued to serve in the Army, first at Ft. Meyers, FL and then in Washington, D.C. (during which time he went to Jump School at Ft. Benning, GA, and was honor graduate of his class). An unaccompanied tour in Korea was followed by service as Professor of Military Science at the University of Missouri, Rolla, where he taught ROTC classes. Bud was stationed in Karlsruhe and Neu-Ulm, Germany and then went to the Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, KS. Commanding an engineer battalion in Vietnam in 1969, Bud earned the Legion of Merit and Bronze star for his service. He served in Ankara, Turkey, on the General Staff for the US contingent of the Central Treaty Organization (CENTO), and traveled extensively with his family, throughout Turkey and the Middle East. After an assignment in Stuttgart, Germany as District Engineer for the state of Baden-Württemberg, Bud was FORSCOM Engineer at Ft. McPherson in Atlanta, GA. He retired from the Army in 1978 as full Colonel after 30 years of distinguished service.
After leaving the Army, Bud taught Civil Engineering at Southern Polytechnic State University in Kennesaw and was then Vice President for Soil Systems, Inc. in Atlanta, GA. In 1989, Bud married Maxine Moore; following his retirement in 1993, they moved to Covington, GA, where he was an active teaching Sunday school and adult literacy classes, building houses with Habitat for Humanity, delivering meals and providing transportation to the elderly, and volunteering with his church, Covington First United Methodist. Bud also lived out his passion for community service through his active membership in the Covington Lions Club and Elks Lodge 1806 B.P.O.E. Bud enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, golf, playing cards, and keeping in touch with friends. After Maxine passed away in 2014, he moved to Merryvale Assisted Living.
Handsome, gregarious, athletically gifted, and with a ready laugh, Bud was blessed with a positive personality and generous spirit that gained him many friends around the world in each stage of his life and career. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him and especially his surviving family: his daughter, Linda Gardner, and her husband, Richard; son, Duane Northcutt, and his wife, Monica Lam; step-daughters, Kim Carter, and husband, Maurice, and Joy Casper; sisters, Norma Horton, Verna Teachworth; and his brother, Barry Northcutt. Preceding him in death were his father, Almond Vernon Northcutt; mother, Orelle Parnell Robinson; three sisters and two brothers.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, August 7, 2017, 3:00 PM, at the First United Methodist Church, in Covington, Rev. Dr. Douglas Gilreath officiating. A private entombment service will be held at Memory Chapel Mausoleum in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family Sunday, August 6, 3:00 - 5:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the food pantry at the First United Methodist Church, 1113 Conyers Street, SW, Covington, GA 30014.
