Melvin Lee "Buster" Ogletree

Melvin Lee “Buster” Ogletree, of Covington, passed away Thursday, November 30, 2023, at the age of 91.  He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. Mr. Ogletree proudly served his country in the United States Army as a paratrooper, reaching the rank of Staff Sargeant during the Korean War. He was an Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club BPOE 1806 and two-time president of Newton County Bulldog Club. In his free time, Mr. Ogletree was an avid bird hunter and fisherman. He was a great gardener and loved sharing his fruits and vegetables with friends and family. In addition, Mr. Ogletree played baseball for the Stewart Community baseball team where he took great pride in helping the team win 26 straight games. Of all these interests and accomplishments, he will be most remembered by his loved ones for his sense of humor, generosity, and the joy he got from dancing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joann Ogletree; parents, Ben and Jennie Ogletree; brother-in-law, James Crowe.

Survivors include his daughters, Sherri Michaelis (Ron), Lisa Day (Ricky); son, Mark Ogletree (Angie); grandchildren, Josh Ogletree, Reagan Lehman, Ben Ogletree, Shannon Langley, Dustin Johnson, Hannah Parris, Evan Ogletree, Anthony Marando, Christina Marando, Rick Day; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Crowe; brother-in-law, Dennis Hammonds (Carol); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service for Mr. Ogletree will be held Monday, December 4, 2023, 3:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Marshall Atha officiating and interment following in New Covington City Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family, at the funeral home, two hours prior to his service, from 1:00 – 3:00 P.M.
