Merle Russell Moore

Merle Russell Moore, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away January 5, 2023. She was 95 years old. Mrs. Moore resided in Decatur, Georgia for over 40 years and in Conyers, Georgia for the past 16 years.

Mrs. Moore enjoyed gardening from an early age and especially enjoyed sharing her plants and flowers with neighbors and family. Gardenias were her favorite, with roses being a close second. Her flower gardens have been the backdrop for many family photos, and this love is ever present in the yards and gardens of the recipients. She is dearly remembered when we smell the gardenias and see the roses blooming.

After raising five children, Mrs. Moore worked as a dental assistant and office manager for most of her career. She loved to travel, visiting Germany, Mexico, the Bahamas and Hawaii before slowing down to spend more time with her children and grandchildren. She loved to read and watch Jane Austin videos when she wasn’t watching an Auburn football game on television.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Julian P. Moore, who passed away in 1979; her daughter, Jennifer Foster Grovenstein Simonton, who passed away in 2016; and her son, Dennis P. Moore who passed away in March 2022. Surviving children include: Julie Strock (Carl) of Tappahannock, VA; Jackie Cummins (Ian) of Conyers, GA; and Jamelle Teer (Preston) of Grayson, GA. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Christopher Strock, John Strock, Ian Cummins, Jessica Foster, Austin Grovenstein, Lisa Grovenstein, Andrea Carroll, Amanda Parker; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Moore was born in Crenshaw County, Alabama to Culver M. and Bessie Furr Russell. She grew up in Andalusia, Alabama and was also preceded in death by her brothers: Jack Russell, Darrell (Pete) Russell; and her sisters: Gussie Eastland and Ruth Legacy Foreman.

A Memorial Service and interment for Mrs. Moore will be held at Mason Cemetery in Brewton, Alabama at a later date.
