Mrs. Mildred Morrow, age 94, of Porterdale, passed away on January 16, 2018, in Centre, AL. Mrs. Morrow was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey "Jack" Morrow, her parents, William and Estelle Roseberry, her brothers, Raymond Roseberry and Billy Roseberry and her sister, Hazel Hood.
She was born in Porterdale and moved to Marietta where she reared her family. She later returned to her community to care for her parents. She became involved in supporting the civic and political community of Newton County. She was a devoted member of Julia Porter United Methodist Church and was a member of Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. When the new Newton County Senior Center opened, she served as Activities Director. She remained an active member for over 20 years and served as President and Treasurer. She developed her speaking skills and became a certified "Public Speaker". She had a great sense of humor and used these talents to entertain senior groups. She was the featured speaker for the Northwest Georgia Area Agency for the Aging at the University of Georgia and a guest speaker for the Cherokee Chapter of the AARP. She served as President of the AARP, and she was recognized for her sincerity and concern for any issues regarding aging. She loved her community and served on the City Council. During her tenure, she was Treasurer and she served on several committees. At age 60, she was elected as Georgia Silver Hair Legislator from Covington House District 3, and she served for six years. As a legislator, she worked for the rights of senior citizens. She introduced a bill in the Silver Hair Legislator which addressed housing needs for seniors in Long Term Care. Later, the bill was passed by the House and Senate and it became a law in the state of Georgia.
She completed her education in "Management Skills" and became certified in Food Catering. In addition to catering weddings and other events, she taught workshops on "Cake Decorating" and designing "Panoramic Easter Eggs". She received numerous Certificates of Appreciation for her volunteer work. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Morrow worked as the Food Manager for the Gordon Foods Employees' Cafeteria.
Mrs. Morrow is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Judith and Larry Caywood and Linda and George Snipes; three grandchildren, Judie Kae Snipes, Eddie Snipes and Stephanie Caywood; six great-grandchildren, Avery Shupert, Emily Snipes, Lucy Snipes, Natalie Snipes, Sophia Snipes and Abigail Snipes. She is also survived by several special nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service for Mrs. Morrow will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2018, 1:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Larry Caywood officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park in Covington. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Tuesday, January 23, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Newton County Senior Center, P.O. Box 466, Covington, GA 30015.
