Mrs. Portia Humphries Benton

Mrs. Portia Humphries Benton, age 74, passed away March 28, 2022, at Pine Pointe Hospice in Macon, Georgia, after a long journey with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born March 13, 1948, in Lawrenceville, Georgia, to the late Thomas John Humphries, Jr., and the late Dixie Nell Humphries. Portia was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jefferson Benton (Jeff); brother, Thomas John Humphries, III; sister, Tommie Humphries Mayo. She is survived by her children, Jennifer Benton Kelly (John) of Macon, Sidney Thomas Benton (Christina) of Greensboro; grandchildren, Brooks Thomas Benton, Andrew Patrick Kelly (Drew), Mary Isabelle Benton (Belle), and Benjamin Conwell Kelly (Ben). Mrs. Benton is also survived by her brother, Jackson Paden Humphries of Lawrenceville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other family.

Mrs. Benton graduated from Central Gwinnett High School at the age of 16 and attended Oxford College and Emory University where she received a degree in Education. She taught elementary school in the Newton County School System before working in the family business at Benton’s Welding Supply.

Mrs. Benton was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a longtime, faithful member of Mansfield Baptist Church where she taught Children’s Sunday School, directed Vacation Bible School, ministered to senior adults and served on numerous committees.

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Benton will be held Saturday, April 2, 2022, 2:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Leigh Halverson and Charlie Henderson officiating. Interment will follow at Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family prior to her service from 1:00 – 1:45 P.M.
