Patricia Hegwood Gillespie, of Stockbridge, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2022, at the age of 80. Mrs. Gillespie was very involved with Newton Baptist Church, helped out with the nursery, was in charge of the activities for the ambassador program, and in the church choir. She was employed by Rockdale County School System. Mrs. Gillespie was a big Georgia Bulldogs fan and took great joy in watching them play. She enjoyed shopping, going to the movies, and reading. Mrs. Gillespie was a member of the Red Hats. Additionally, she loved music, singing, and was always found dancing at the barn and Ma and Pa’s Opry House. Mrs. Gillespie adored her family and cherished the time spent with her grandchildren dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Walter Hegwood; son, Kelly Hegwood; grandson, Jordy Hegwood; parents, Will and Pearl Bell Walden; sister, Mary Dimsdale; and brothers, W. H. Walden, Jack Walden, Roy Walden, Troy Walden, Gene Walden.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Gillespie; sons, Mark Hegwood (Annette), Jeff Hegwood (Cindy), Gary Hegwood (Tamie); grandchildren, Crystal Stevens (James), Emily Ortiz (Ruben), Jake Hegwood (April), Taylor Phillips (Chance), Jessie Hegwood, Dalton Hegwood, Devyn Hegwood, Kimberly Hegwood, Caleigh Hegwood; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; brothers, Ed Walden, Larry Walden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Gillespie will be held Wednesday, February 2, 2022, 12 Noon, at Newton Baptist Church, 720 Jack Neely Road, in Covington, with Rev. Jeff Hegwood and Pastor Tony Howeth officiating and interment following in Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. She will lie in state at Newton Baptist Church from 11:00 A.M. – 12 Noon. Friends are invited to visit with the family at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.

Governor Brian Kemp’s latest executive order has eliminated restrictions on large gatherings; however, CDC guidelines recommend social distancing (6 feet apart) and wearing of masks while in public. Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home requests that you observe these recommendations while in our funeral home attending visitations and/or services.
