Peggy Jo Mitchell of Oxford passed away June 29, 2016, at the age of 81. Mrs. Mitchell, or "Grandmama", as she was affectionately known to her family, adored her children and grandchildren, and loved cooking for them. She was a faithful member of Newton Baptist Church and the Ambassadors Sunday School class. One of her favorite pastimes was traveling with her church family. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Larkin and Annie Nell (Binford) Canup; and her brothers, James and Sidney Canup.
Survivors include her beloved husband of 58 ½ years, William W. Mitchell; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Dean McAvoy, Jan and Terry Barnett; sons and daugthers-in-law, Julian and Jane Mitchell, Joel and Christy Mitchell; grandchildren, Austin and Emily Mitchell, Jena Mitchell, Kayla and Jared Martz, Evan and Katie McAvoy, Melissa McAvoy, Taylor Mitchell, Amber Mitchell, Kristin Barnett, Jacob McAvoy, Tori Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Noah Martz, Lily Kate Mitchell; sisters-in-law, Polly Canup, Cynthia Canup; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Mitchell will be held at Newton Baptist Church, Saturday, July 2, 2016, 2:00 PM with Pastor Tony Howeth officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road in Covington, Friday, July 1, 2016, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made, in Mrs. Mitchell's memory, to Newton Baptist Church - Missions Fund, 720 Jack Neely Road, Covington, GA 30016.
