Richard Lewis Kelly of Covington passed away February 23, 2016, at the age of 88. Mr. Kelly was born October 26, 1927 in Marion, Indiana to the late Samuel and Vella Kelly. He worked in a local grocery store while attending Marion High School, where he graduated in 1946. Mr. Kelly joined the Navy and served most of his time on the USS Providence during the Korean War. He worked at RCA Tube Plant until he graduated from Purdue University in 1957, with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He then started his teaching career in Flint Michigan where he taught for 5 years. Mr. Kelly moved to Aurora, Ohio after obtaining his Master of Arts Degree at the University of Michigan. In Aurora he was active in the Boy Scouts as his sons were growing up, served on the city council, and church council at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. In addition he worked as an Industrial Arts Teacher at the Aurora Middle School until he retired. He and his wife, Kathryn, then moved to Covington, where he enjoyed woodworking and writing poetry. Mr. Kelly was a member of St. James the Apostle Catholic Church in McDonough.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Kathryn Mulligan Kelly; children and their spouses, Rosmarie Kelly, Ronald and Sandy Kelly, Karyn and Jeremy Pearson, Richard Samuel Kelly, Kevin and Robyn Kelly; sister, Roberta McDaniel; family friend, Helene Bourque Pallay.
A Graveside Service with military honors for Mr. Kelly will be held Saturday, March 5, 2016, 2:00 PM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road in Covington, with Father Rivero officiating. Friends are welcome to join the family immediately after the service for a wake. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Memorial Honor Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
