Robert Larry Burney, age 69, of Covington, died February 11, 2011, at Newton Medical Center. A native of Newton County, Mr. Burney was a member of Stewart Baptist Church and was retired from Delta Airlines with 25 years of service. He and his father operated Burney's Boat Docks, and were well known for building boat docks and boat houses, a business which he continued after his father's death. Mr. Burney was an eight year Veteran of the United States Air Force, serving overseas in Turkey and in the Philippines. He loved fishing and being on the lake, and will be remembered for his elaborate outdoor Christmas decorations, many of which he created himself. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert Roy and Frances Cagle Burney, and a brother, Jerry Burney.
Surviving are his wife, Eleanor G. Burney; daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Keith Broach; son and daughter-in-law, Benji and Jeri Meredith, all of Covington; grandchildren, Brandon Broach, Tiffany Cowan, Jordan Meredith and Jonah Meredith; sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Jack Burnette; brother and sister-in-law, Sterling and Mary Lou Burney, all of Covington; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mr. Burney will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, February 14, 2011, at the Access Road Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, with Pastor Jerry Jones, officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park, with Military Honors.
