Robert Barnes Stokes, age 94, of Covington, passed away April 20, 2016, just twelve days after his beloved wife, Sara. Mr. Stokes was a proud veteran of the United States Navy. He served valiantly for eight years - including World War II. He was a decorated veteran who earned several service medals, including the Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. In addition to his assistance in the sinking of a German submarine, prior to World War II, he was a mate aboard the first ship in Naples Harbor during the Italian Invasion, and was present for the attack on Iwo Jima and the first naval strike on Japan. Mr. Stokes loved the Lord, his family and his friends. As a man of his word, he was always honest and therefore greatly respected. Following his retirement from the Atlanta Fire Department, he worked for Ivan Allen Company as lead of the Stationery and Delivery Department. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Sara (Humphries) Stokes; parents, Frampton and Janette (Hooker) Stokes; his two sisters and five brothers.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sheri and Paul Parker of Covington; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; as well as many dear friends.
