Sandra Louise Deaton, of Frankfort, KY, died on December 30, 2018. Born to William and Geraldine Deaton in Williamson, WV, she graduated from Marshall University, where she also earned a Master's degree. She enjoyed a long career in education, first as a sixth grade and special education teacher, a consultant with the Kentucky Department of Education, and an assistant director of a federal research project at the University of Kentucky. She then worked for many years at the Legislative Research Commission, where she rose to committee staff administrator for the Education Committee.
Sandy was a volunteer with the Friends of Paul Sawyier Library, Immanuel Baptist's Study Buddies, the Kings Center, and a local food pantry. She was also a member of bridge club, supper club, and her "hookers" group, with whom she created beautiful rugs. Sandy loved to learn, never threw away a good book, traveled regularly, enjoyed gardening, and supported the performing arts. She was an elder of First Presbyterian Church, serving on several mission trips and committees. In her retirement, Sandy divided her time between Kentucky and Florida and enjoyed hosting family and friends. Sandy always had friends because of her unrivaled thoughtfulness, generosity, and sharp wit.
Sandy was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, great-aunt, cousin, pet parent, and friend. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Kim Deaton of Florida, and their children: Virginia and CJ Ryan (Ames and Ives) of Rhode Island; and Sylvia and Ted Oberwager of New York. She is also survived by several cousins, as well as many friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
