Mrs. Sara Ethel (Malcolm) Hawkes, beloved wife of the late J. B. Hawkes, died Monday, March 21, 2011, at the age of 100 at Ledgewood Nursing Home in Beverly, MA. Mrs. Hawkes was born and raised in Walton County, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late George C. and Sarah J. Malcolm and sister of nine siblings who passed before her. After raising her family, and until the time of her retirement, Mrs. Hawkes was employed as a secretary at the Presbyterian Center, in Atlanta, GA. Prior to having a family, she worked as a secretary for General Electric Lamp Division, in Atlanta. She was a resident of Georgia until the age of 94, when she moved to Massachusetts to be near her son and his family. She loved all kinds of handwork, from knitting and crocheting, to making quilts and hooking rugs. Her extended family and friends in the South were very important to her, and she missed being near them. She kept in touch when she moved to Massachusetts, through letters and birthday cards to all she loved. She appreciated visits when family and friends traveled north, and always wanted to know the news about their lives. She had a remarkable memory and knew the life story, name, and relation of all of her large, extended family. Each year she sent over 100 birthday cards to family members. She was a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend and was much loved by those left behind. Her longtime, dear friend, Lucille Hicks, who faithfully called her each Sunday, recently passed before her; as did her beloved niece, Wilma Early, with whom she frequently exchanged letters. She is survived by her son, James B. Hawkes, and his wife, Mary Lou, of Manchester by the Sea, MA; granddaughter, Allyson Christine Shryoc, and her husband, Kirk, of Montclair, NJ; great- grandson, James Gavin Shryoc; many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Funeral Services for Mrs. Hawkes will be held Tuesday, March 29, 2011, 11:00 AM, at First Presbyterian Church, in Covington, with Rev. William B. Wade, Jr., officiating, and interment following in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, in Neese, GA. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Rd., Monday, March 28, from 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1169 Clark St. SW, Covington, GA 30014.
