Walker Doyle Smith of Covington, passed away Monday, May 25, 2015, at the age of 88. He joined the United States Navy, at just 16 years old, and served on the USS Thompson which was among the first ships to invade Normandy. Mr. Smith was a former resident of Heard County, where he enjoyed participating in local Senior activities and singing in his church. He was very strong-willed, yet kind to everyone he met. Mr. Smith was a loving and devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who loved nothing more than spending time with his family. He was loved and will be greatly missed. Preceding him in death were his parents, Walker and Annie Lou (Wyatt) Smith.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Charles Massey of Covington, Brenda and William Lawson of Beaver, UT, Fay and David Armstrong of Social Circle, Gay Vassak of Monroe; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mr. Smith will be held Thursday, May 28, 2015, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Danny Sorrells officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, May 27, from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM.
