Paul Warren Sweeney, MSGT USMC (Retired), of Oxford passed away April 7, 2017, at 77 years of age. A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Mr. Sweeney proudly and honorably served his country for 23 years. His military service was conducted in multiple locations to include: California, Hawaii, North Carolina, Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., as well as two tours in Okinawa, and one tour in Vietnam from 1968-1969. Paul retired from military service on December 31, 1979. After retiring from active duty, MSGT Sweeney began his Civil Service Career with the Department of the Navy at Parris Island. He went back to college and earned an Associates degree in General Business from Beaufort Technical College in 1982 and his Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of South Carolina in 1986. Mr. Sweeney continued to work for the Department of the Navy and worked in Manama, Bahrain for 4 1/2 years, La Maddalena, Italy for 4 years, and St. Maegan in Cornwall, England for 4 years. He retired from the Department of the Navy after nearly 21 years of Civil Service on January 3, 2002 in Pensacola, Florida. Shortly after retiring, he and his wife moved to Oxford, Georgia to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Mr. Sweeney is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Susan Sweeney; son and daughter-in-law, Paul Warren, Jr. and Sebrina Sweeney of Oxford, GA; daughter, Stephanie Sweeney of Hendersonville, NC; grandsons Michael Sweeney, Aiden Sweeney and Jack Sweeney of Oxford, GA; sisters and brother-in-law, Gene Ann Santiago of Savannah, GA and Susann and Eugene LaRouche of McKinley, TX; brother, Michael Sweeney of Romano, CA; and many beloved nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
Paul in life was an avid reader and a fantastic story teller. His love of music lasted a life time. He loved his grandchildren very much and enjoyed attending nearly every event they were involved in.
A memorial Service for Mr. Sweeney will be held Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 2 pm, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, GA with Dr. Billy Moss officiating. Friends may visit with the family prior to the memorial, from 1 pm to 1:45 pm and following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to any of the following:
